Round up Post

Posted by: Louise Bowen

So it’s been a really busy couple of months for the Bird in a Cage project. We’ve been up to some amazing activities and the project is well underway. We’ve been working with the young people from Ysgol Gymraeg Casnewydd primary school and Lewis Girls School in Caerphilly to learn about Lady Rhondda and to develop our own creative response to this amazing woman and the things she’s done:
After reading about some of the ways that the Welsh Suffragettes began to raise their voices we’ve spent some time working with ‘litrepreneur’ Mab Jones to write our own suffrage verse inspired by the original writings of the Suffragettes themselves.
We’ve also spent some time working with talented Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama graduate Tic Ashfield on creating our own choral score to use with the words we wrote with Mab’s help. Tic’s a fantastic composer and songwriter who we’ve worked with on other projects, so it was great to be involved with her again.
As well as all of this the children from Ysgol Gymraeg Casnewydd have been trying out their artistic skills by making their own Suffrage banners to get into the revolutionary spirit. Having seen some original examples thanks to St Fagans we rolled up our sleeves and got stuck into a banner making workshop in April.
The girls in Caerphilly have even been using their work with us to achieve their own OCN Level 2 history qualification by researching the life and activities of Lady Rhondda.
We’ve got loads of new stuff coming up over the summer, so don’t forget to follow our adventures on Twitter (@thiswasmyworld) and Facebook and add share your stories and pictures with us too!
